VIDEO PICK: The Best & Worst Editions of Classic Books
I clicked onto this video thinking they were going to talk about the different editions in terms of the actual text, and they do take that into consideration, but it's also a lot about aesthetics which I love. Two of her favorites are the black Penguin Classics and the Oxford World Classic editions. I've always loved the black Penguin Classics and I've recently started my collection of them. I now have the mindset of "If it has a Penguin Classics edition, I'm getting that". For a Lit class I took, I had to get an Oxford World Classic edition of "Northanger Abbey" and that was my first introduction to those editions. So far, I only have that one book but it's because of the aforementioned mindset. If I'm buying a classic, there's a good chance it comes in a Penguin Classic and I prefer those over Oxford Classics. In my last post, I talked about being on a book buying ban but once I'm buying books again, I'm absolutely going to buy all the books I talked about that are in the Oxford World editions.
Even though I already have my preferred editions, this video was really helpful. The first edition they talked about were the Penguin Clothbound editions. I always see them at bookstores and while I love how they look, I was never going to buy them because I don't like hardcovers. But it turns out they're not very good if you're actually going to read them and not just have them as part of a collection.
Maybe it's her calming voice, maybe I liked seeing editions that I had never heard of before, maybe it's because the video reminds me of old school BookTube where people just talk about books instead of everything being a vlog but I really liked this video. It did make me want to buy books really bad but I have to stay strong!
